What are dermal fillers

Dermal fillers, often referred to as Cosmetic fillers, are a non-surgical option to correct the appearance of wrinkles, volume loss, and scars. As well, fillers can be used to restore volume that has been lost due to aging and other factors. Dermal fillers can help improve the skin by stimulating the natural production of necessary proteins and other nutrients, ultimately revitalizing the skin from the inside.

Dermal fillers are usually made from bioresorbable materials. They can include ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, poly-L-lactic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, or polycaprolactone microspheres. Other ingredients, such as vitamins and minerals, may be added to boost skin health. As well, anesthetics may be added to help reduce pain and discomfort during the procedure.

Aesthetic fillers work to revitalize the skin, fill in lines and wrinkles, and restore volume. These fillers are usually temporary, and the solution is absorbed into the surrounding tissue over time.

Areas of use

Dermal fillers are all uniquely formulated to target certain areas.

Fillers can be used:

to fill in wrinkles, folds, and other skin depressions in the face, decollete, neck or back of the hands, including nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and frown lines;

  • to restore volume to areas like the cheeks;
  • to enhance facial contours;
  • to reduce the appearance of scars;
  • to hydrate and nourish the skin;
  • and to add volume to thin lips and enhance lip shape.

It is important to use fillers according to the manufacturer’s indications. Some fillers can not be used in combination with certain treatments or other aesthetic injectables.

How are they used?

Cosmetic fillers are to be administered by a licensed and trained medical professional.

After an initial consultation, you can determine the needs and desired results of your client. Inject the filler into the treatment area using an appropriate injection technique. Do not overcorrect. Only use the dermal filler as indicated to avoid complications. Doctors use fillers to rejuvenate the skin, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, and to enhance facial features. Once the treatment is complete, you may need to massage the area to evenly distribute the filler. Advise your patient of any aftercare specifications to reduce the duration of injection-related side effects. Some fillers need to be administered over the course of several treatments. Set up a schedule with your patient to maintain the desired effects.

How long does the treatment last?

The duration of dermal fillers varies. Most fillers are temporary and use solutions that will be safely absorbed by the surrounding tissue. As well, the duration of the effects can be affected by the patient’s age, lifestyle, and skin condition. On average, fillers last between 6 months to 2 years. There are fillers on the market that can last up to 4 years. Discuss your patient’s goals to determine which dermal filler might be the best for them.

Types of dermal fillers

Most fillers on the market are temporary, although there are some permanent fillers. Temporary soft fillers are extremely popular, as they are generally considered to be well-tolerated by most patients. Dermal fillers are either naturally derived or synthetic, and are either temporary or permanent.

Calcium hydroxylapatite is a temporary filler that is synthetically produced. It is used to increase facial volume and smooth moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral-like compound found in human bones. Fillers formulated with this compound usually don’t require skin testing. As well, calcium hydroxylapatite has a long safety record due to its initial use in dentistry.

Hyaluronic acid is another temporary filler that is quite popular in the aesthetic industry. As the body naturally produces hyaluronic acid, it is generally well-tolerated. Hyaluronic acid can be derived synthetically or from animal sources, both of which have been clinically studied. As well, hyaluronic acid fillers are used to reduce the appearance of scars, fill in skin depressions, and to enhance lip shape.

Poly-L-lactic acid is another synthetic filler that is used to help stimulate collagen production in the body. This temporary filler will be absorbed by the body over time, but the newly produced collagen usually lasts even after the filler has been metabolized.

Polymethylmethacrylate microspheres are used as a permanent, biocompatible injectable solution. While this polymer is used in cosmetic fillers, it is also used in other medical devices.
