General Information about Radiesse

What is Radiesse (Radiance)?

Radiesse (formerly known as Radiance) is has been approved by regulatory agencies as an injectable dermal filler used to treat skin imperfections at a deeper level. This filler is most effective for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and volume loss. Unlike other fillers, the calcium-based microspheres in Radiesse encourage natural collagen to form—which increases the longevity of the effects even after the gel has been metabolized by the body.

This non-pyrogenic, latex-free, bioresorbable injectable comes in either 0.8ml or 1.5ml prefilled syringe and is available with lidocaine.

What makes a good candidate?

Clients looking to refresh their appearance by correcting deep wrinkles and folds in the face and hands are excellent candidates. Radiesse is also a great option to restore volume in the backs of the hands.

Do not administer Radiesse in:

  • Patients with a skin infection;
  • Patients who are taking any blood thinners or drugs that would interfere with clotting of the blood;
  • Breastfeeding or pregnant patients.

Areas treated with Radiesse

  • Nasolabial folds
  • Pre-jowl folds
  • Chin wrinkles
  • Marionette lines
  • Corners of the mouth
  • Backs of the hands

Doctors also use Radiesse to contour facial features and to restore volume to the face. As well, doctors use this dermal filler for vocal cord augmentation and nipple reconstruction.

How does Radiesse work?

Radiesse is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a gel carrier.

The microspheres stimulate collagen growth, which causes new tissue to develop for up to 2 years. This helps create a support system under the skin.

Treatment details

The administration will last for about 15-20 minutes, depending on the condition of the skin. Discuss the expected results with your patient prior to treatment. As well, ensure you inform them of possible side effects, contraindications, and precautions.

Radiesse is also available with lidocaine for added comfort during the procedure. The depth and amount of the injection will depend on the correction. Inject using a 1:1 correction. Avoid overcorrecting. Refer to the product leaflet for detailed use instructions.

After treatment, massage or smooth out the area to distribute the gel evenly.

How long does Radiesse last?

While the results of Radiesse are temporary, they can last more than a year in most patients. As well, the newly-produced collagen can last even after the filler has been absorbed. Maintenance treatments can be scheduled as needed.

Safety information

The Radiesse range of products have been approved by regulatory agencies for medical use, assuring its safety.

Other than the initial side effects of swelling, bruising, and redness, reactions may include:

Lumps, Induration or nodule formation;

  • Infection;
  • Numbness;
  • Headaches;
  • Rash;
  • Bleeding.

Ensure to follow appropriate injection techniques to avoid adverse effects. Do not inject Radiesse into the blood vessels, organs, or infected tissue. Your patient can apply a cold compress or ice to the treatment area for up to 24 hours after the injection. Advise your client to avoid sun, saunas, and certain facial treatments for a few days. As well, have your client rest their face for the first week by limiting excess facial movement.

Recovery time

Recovery from a Radiesse treatment requires very little to no time; patients are able to resume their daily routine as soon as they leave the doctor’s office.

For a patient who has been treated with Radiesse at the back of their hands, they should avoid strenuous activities and if it is at the face, they should keep off extreme temperatures for at least 24 hours or when the swelling and bruising has resolved.

Cost of Radiesse

Cost of treatment will depend on multiple factors, including the type of treatment, area to be treated, clinic and geographical region. In the United States, a Radiesse treatment can cost an average of $975.
