Juvéderm Ultra XC a dermal filler approved by the FDA in 2010. It is used most commonly to increase the fullness of the lip area, as well as treat wrinkles in the face area.

The product is made up of hyaluronic acid (HA), lidocaine, and water. The formula is designed to plump up the patient's skin by increasing the overall volume from beneath.

The treatment is intended for all adults who want to improve the look of their face and lips.

How Does Juvéderm Ultra XC Work?

Juvéderm Ultra XC works by combining hyaluronic acid with water to make a gel-like substance that creates volume when injected underneath the skin. The process will also aid in the appearance of wrinkles, making them look more filled in and providing a youthful appearance.

The XC variant also includes lidocaine. This will help prevent pain and discomfort in the injection areas. Additionally, it helps the patient save time spent on applying a separate pain reliever.

Similar Treatments to Juvéderm Ultra

Juvéderm Ultra XC is part of the Juvéderm family of products, so depending on what the desired results are, one of there other offerings may be better suited for use. There are also other treatments available to obtain the same results as Juvéderm Ultra.

The main alternatives to Juvéderm Ultra are:

  1. Juvéderm Voluma XC, which is primarily used on the cheeks.
  2. Juvéderm Vollure XC, which is primarily used for parentheses lines.
  3. The dermal filler Restylane provides similar results.
  4. Botox treatments are commonly used for areas treated by Juvéderm Ultra.

While Botox is commonly used to treat wrinkles, it will not last as long as Juvéderm Ultra and is a much more invasive procedure. Botox works by relaxing your muscles to reduces wrinkles, while Juvéderm Ultra works by plumping the skin.

Where Does Juvéderm Ultra Work?


Juvéderm Ultra is designed to work on the wrinkles that show up around the sides of your mouth as you age. This effect is more noticeable in smokers and is commonly referred to as smile lines or laugh lines.

The dermal filler can also be used in:

  1. Lip augmentation, another common use of Juvéderm Ultra.
  2. Wrinkles in the cheek area.
  3. Wrinkles under the eyes.

While it has been used for under the eyes and in the cheek area, another Juvéderm injection may be more effective.

Expected Results of Juvéderm Ultra XC

With any Juvéderm injection, you can expect to see the effects of the treatment immediately. The results, on average, last between 6 months and 1 year. In order to maintain the desired result, you will need to get follow-up treatments.

There is no recovery time associated with Juvéderm Ultra, however, during the first 24 hours it is recommended that you avoid:

  1. Strenuous exercise from activities like sports or heavy work.
  2. Direct sun exposure.
  3. Consuming anything that contains alcohol.

Failure to do so could result in increased itching, swelling, and redness in the treated area.

Juvéderm Ultra XC Procedure

There is very little needed in order to prepare for your appointment with the Juvéderm family of products. While the total time required to have the work done will vary by patient, you can expect the whole treatment to take no longer than an hour.

As Juvéderm Ultra XC contains lidocaine, you will not need to spend extra time using a topical anesthetic before receiving the injections. This is only offered with the XC variant and is not found in Juvéderm Ultra alone.

During the procedure, you should feel little to no pain. Most commonly, patients feel slight pressure and tingling sensation in the area of injection.

Preparing for Juvéderm Ultra XC Treatment

When getting Juvéderm Ultra injections, it is recommended you expect to spend at least an hour having the work done. It is advised to show up to your appointment early so you can make payments and complete and required paperwork.

As Juvéderm has no recovery time required, you can feel safe driving yourself home if need be. This removes the need to arrange for a ride home after treatment, but you may wish to do so in case you experience any discomfort.

Juvéderm Ultra XC Side Effects and Risks

While the dermal filler is considered safe for most patients who use the Juvéderm Ultra as instructed, the treatment is not without some side effects. These include things like:

  1. Redness, swelling, and bruising.
  2. Tenderness, firmness, and lumps in the treated area.
  3. Skin discoloration in the treated area.

All of these are generally mild in most cases and should clear up within a week without any further intervention required.

While rare, allergic reactions to Juvéderm can happen and are sometimes serious in nature. It is advised you contact your doctor immediately if you experience any these symptoms:

  1. Hives forming around the treated area.
  2. Any difficulties breathing normally.
  3. A rash in the treated area.
  4. Signs of infection in, or scarring of, the treated skin.

If you have a known allergy to HA or lidocaine, it is obviously highly recommended you don’t use any of the products offered by Juvéderm.

How Much Does Juvéderm Ultra XC Cost?

On average, Juvéderm Ultra XC costs around $750 for one treatment. This price can be higher or lower depending on the specific needs and desired results of the patient. Things like location and the number of injections required contribute to higher costs per treatment.

Juvéderm injections are not surgical in nature, so there will be no requirement to take time off work to recover, although you may choose to do so while you wait for any side effects to wear off.

Juvéderm products are classified as cosmetic. This means your insurance is very unlikely to cover them, leaving you to pay for them out of pocket. Your provider should be able to give you a reasonable idea of what you can expect to pay, and often provide monthly plans to help patients pay for the procedure.
