It can also prevent acute graft-versus-host disease in adults and children undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. What Is ORENCIA® Used For?

ORENCIA® is used to treat autoimmune joint conditions, such as

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) – This condition is characterized by joint pain, swelling, and morning stiffness due to an autoimmune attack. ORENCIA® is used to manage symptoms of RA in adults.
  • Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) – This is a type of arthritis characterized by painful and swollen joints alongside psoriasis plaques on the skin.
  • Polyarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (PIJA) – ORENCIA® can be administered to manage symptoms of PIJA (the most common type of child arthritis) in children above two years of age.

ORENCIA® is sold as a liquid solution and powder to be mixed in. It’s administered as an injection under the skin or an intravenous infusion. When given by infusion, it is given every two weeks for the first three doses and then every four weeks after that. When injected into the skin, it is given once a week.

How Long Does ORENCIA® Last?

ORENCIA® has a long half-life, meaning it can stay in the patient’s system for up to four months.

It starts working in the body as soon as it is administered. However, RA, PsA, and PIJA are all chronic conditions, which means the patient will need regular doses for up to three months to get better. For graft-versus-host disease prevention, the drug is taken for about one month.

In addition, it is a long-term medicine and should not be stopped abruptly, which may lead to disease flare-ups.

ORENCIA® Product Range

ORENCIA® is available in two forms — as an IV infusion and an SC injection.

  • ORENCIA® Intravenous (IV) Infusion – The IV infusion is supplied in single-use vials with a strength of 250 mg per vial. It is approved for patients six or older and administered by a medical professional through a vein as a 30-minute infusion. Dosing is based on the patient’s weight.
  • ORENCIA® Subcutaneous (SC) Injection – It is available as a prefilled syringe or an auto-injector that is administered under the patient’s skin. The prefilled syringe is approved for patients two years or older. Long-term patients may self-inject using the auto-injector after receiving appropriate training and permission from the healthcare practitioner, but it is not always recommended.

ORENCIA® Side Effects

ORENCIA® can cause a range of side effects, from mild to severe.

Mild side effects include:

  • Respiratory infections
  • Common colds
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Back pain
  • Dizziness
  • Indigestion or diarrhea
  • Stomach pain

These effects often disappear with continued usage, usually within a few days or a couple of weeks. If they become too bothersome, it’s important to reevaluate the patient’s case and discontinue ORENCIA® if necessary.

Serious side effects can occur, but they aren’t common. They include:

  • Skin reactions, including itching, swelling, warmth, or redness
  • Pain or discomfort during urine
  • Epstein-Barr virus or cytomegalovirus infections
  • Allergic reactions
  • Cancer
  • Stabbing chest pain and difficulty breathing
  • Weight loss

To reduce the risk of harmful side effects, it’s important to buy ORENCIA® from trusted sources and administer it responsibly.

ORENCIA® vs. the Competition

It’s important to understand how ORENCIA® compares to alternatives to make an informed decision for your patients.

  • ORENCIA® vs ENBREL

ENBREL is an injection used to reduce symptoms of moderate to severely active rheumatoid arthritis. It also prevents joint damage from getting worse and improves physical function in patients living with the condition.

However, patients treated with ENBREL are at increased risk for developing serious infections that may lead to hospitalization or death. On the other hand, several studies have shown that ORENCIA® is associated with a far lower risk of serious infection and hospitalization when compared to ENBREL.

  • ORENCIA® vs REMICADE

REMICADE (the brand name for infliximab) is a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor. It works by binding to and blocking TNF-alpha, alleviating the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and Crohn’s disease, among other conditions.

While ORENCIA® works by targeting T-cells, REMICADE has a broader action on TNF-alpha, which plays a role in activating multiple cell types involved in inflammation. This means that it can be more effective for patients with severe symptoms or for those who don’t respond well to ORENCIA®.
