Orthovisc is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution of sodium hyaluronate. The sodium hyaluronate in Orthovisc functions as a tissue lubricant, and is thought to play an important role in modulating the interactions between tissues. It can also act as a viscoelastic support for maintaining separation between tissues. Orthovisc is indicated as a viscoelastic supplement or a replacement for synovial fluid in human joints. It is well suited for treatment of the symptoms of human synovial joint dysfunctions, such as osteoarthritis. The actions of Orthovisc are lubrication and mechanical support.

And a set of traceability labels.

Orthovisc is an injectable, clear, viscoelastic solution indicated for relieving osteoarthritis pain. Orthovisc’s main ingredient is ultra-pure, high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, which is similar to the hyaluronic acid normally found in the synovial fluid of the joints. Unlike some forms of hyaluronic acid, Orthovisc is made in the lab from bacterial fermentation, not from avian sources. This means it is less likely to cause allergic reactions in clients with egg or bird allergies.

Hyaluronic acid breaks down within the body as it ages. As this cushioning layer is lost from the knee, the bones in the joint start to rub together, causing inflammation and pain. When you inject this solution into your patient’s knee, the joint is given the lubrication and cushioning it needs to function in a pain-free manner. This pain relief can last up to around 6 months before another Orthovisc treatment is needed.

Orthovisc is comprised of 15mg/ml of sodium hyaluronate.

This device is restricted to use by physicians. Orthovisc is injected into the joint via intra-articular administration using an 18–21G needle. The volume of product to be used will vary depending upon the size of the joint, although it should not exceed 2ml for the knee. Any joint effusion should be removed before injecting Orthovisc. For the comfort of the patient, a suitable anesthetic may be administered before the treatment.

The recommended treatment regimen is 3 injections spaced 1 week apart for each treatment course. Do not exceed 1 treatment course for any individual joint in any 6-month period.

In the U.S. and Canada, Orthovisc may only be used for the management of pain due to osteoarthritis of the knee.

Orthovisc can offer clients relief from osteoarthritis pain for about 6 months after their initial 3 weekly injections.

Many doctors will prescribe viscosupplementation to their patients when other osteoarthritis therapies, such as anti-inflammatory and pain relief products, physical therapy, and exercise, no longer work. You can give your patients Orthovisc injections as a last-resort to replace other therapies, or you can supplement other osteoarthritis therapies with Orthovisc injections. This product should not be used on patients with a known sensitivity to any of the ingredients contained in Orthovisc, or those who have allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins.

With extensive clinical research supporting its safety and effectiveness, Orthovisc is the ideal treatment for patients experiencing pain and discomfort due to synovial joint dysfunctions such as osteoarthritis.

Side effects of Orthovisc injection may include as bruising, swelling, redness, or a hot sensation at the injection site. Your patients could also feel achy or have temporary knee inflammation after treatment. Because the hyaluronic acid present in Orthovisc is similar to that found naturally in the body, it should not cause an allergic reaction after use. If any adverse effects are observed, a medical practitioner should be consulted immediately.
