NEXPLANON® is a contraceptive implant that provides long-term birth control. It is a matchstick-sized rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm that releases a steady but low dose of etonogestrel hormone. This prevents ovulation and thickens cervical mucus, inhibiting sperm penetration. According to the FDA, it has a failure rate of only 0.1 percent, which makes it one of the most effective contraceptives out there. To responsibly buy NEXPLANON® online, it is essential first to understand its composition, variants, side effects, and alternatives.

What Is NEXPLANON® Used For?

The main purpose of NEXPLANON® is to prevent pregnancy. It is a highly effective and convenient option for women seeking a reliable, reversible, and low-maintenance contraceptive method.

It may also have additional benefits for some patients, such as lighter menstrual bleeding and reduced cramps.

How to Use NEXPLANON®?

Before prescribing NEXPLANON®, conduct a comprehensive medical and reproductive history assessment. Discuss the patient’s reproductive goals and their past contraceptive use. Make sure they understand the benefits, risks, and potential side effects associated with the implant.

It is also advisable to identify contraindications such as known or suspected pregnancy, liver disease, active thrombophlebitis, allergies, and a history of breast cancer. You want to rule out these contraindications before proceeding.

Once done, here’s how to administer it:

  1. The NEXPLANON® implant is a small, flexible rod that is inserted subdermally in the inner side of the non-dominant upper arm.
  2. Before insertion, prepare for an aseptic technique and ensure a sterile environment.
  3. Use the NEXPLANON® applicator to insert the rod under the skin at a 30-degree angle.
  4. Confirm the correct placement of the implant through palpation immediately after insertion.
  5. Instruct the patient to avoid touching the insertion site to prevent infection.

How Long Does NEXPLANON® Last?

NEXPLANON® usually lasts for up to three years. As for the implant procedure, the process takes about 10 minutes.

The activation time of the contraceptive depends on the patient’s menstrual cycle. If someone gets NEXPLANON®  implanted in the first five days of the menstrual cycle, they’ll be instantly protected from pregnancy. But if it is implanted on any other day, the contraceptive will begin working seven days after the procedure.

In addition, women who recently gave birth can use this implant three weeks after delivery. If NEXPLANON® is implanted 21 days post-delivery or before, it will begin working immediately. However, if the patient opts for NEXPLANON®  after 21 days, it may take seven days for the contraceptive to get activated.

NEXPLANON® Product Range

Whether you buy NEXPLANON® online or via a brick-and-mortar store, it’s important to know there are no variants of this implant. Previously, there was another birth control arm implant called Implanon. However, after the introduction of NEXPLANON® in October 2010, Implanon is not as common. It is no longer commercially available in the USA.

NEXPLANON® replaced Implanon because of its two key safety features. These are:

  • Specialized Applicator: Unlike Implanon, NEXPLANON® comes with a dedicated and specialized applicator, which reduces the risk of insertion error.
  • Barium Sulfate: Each NEXPLANON® implant contains a small amount of barium sulfate, which is a radiographic contrast agent. It makes the implant visible on imaging tests, allowing healthcare providers to confirm correct placement.

NEXPLANON® Side Effects

NEXPLANON® may cause minor side effects, such as irregular menstrual bleeding, headaches, and mood changes. Other side effects include:

  • Acne
  • Weight gain
  • Breast pain
  • Sore throat
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Vaginal inflammation

Some users may also experience pain or discomfort at the insertion site.

NEXPLANON® vs the Competition

Before buying NEXPLANON® in wholesale, it’s a good idea to learn about its competitors. These are:

1. Depo-Provera

Depo-Provera is an injectable contraceptive that protects against pregnancy for three months. Unlike implants, it requires regular intramuscular injections of medroxyprogesterone acetate, a synthetic progestin, and is administered by a healthcare professional.

Note that one shot of Depo-Provera can cost anywhere between $0 and $150, depending on where patients live and their insurance programs. If the cost is $150 and someone needs 12 shots over three years, the total comes down to $1800.

On the other hand, NEXPLANON® costs around $1000 – $1200 per dose, making it more cost-effective as compared to Depo-Provera.

2. Intrauterine Devices (IUD)

Intrauterine devices, such as Mirena or Skyla, are long-acting contraceptives inserted into the uterus. These devices release hormones (predominantly progestin) and protect against pregnancy for several years. They offer an alternative for individuals seeking a different form of long-term contraception without the need for a subcutaneous implant.
