Synvisc is a sterile, non-pyrogenic, elasto-viscous fluid containing hylan. Hylan is a derivative of hyaluronan, which is responsible for the elastoviscosity of synovial fluid in the joints. With this, Synvisc injections may be used as a temporary replacement and supplement for this fluid.

Synvisc achieves its therapeutic effect through visco-supplementation, a process whereby physiological and rheological states of the arthritic joint tissues are restored. Visco-supplementation with Synvisc decreases joint pain and discomfort, allowing more extensive movement.

Synvisc’s chemically cross-linked formula makes it more stable than other viscosupplements. This means that it may provide clients great relief from their osteoarthritis symptoms for up to 6 months.

Osteoarthritis is characterized by the breakdown of hyaluronic acid in the joints’ synovial fluid. Known for the lubrication and cushioning of the joints, this substance causes the bones in the joints to rub together as it diminishes. As this occurs, pain, inflammation, and decreased mobility are experienced, severely affecting the patient’s overall quality of life.

When injected into the joints, Synvisc replaces this lost hyaluronic acid and cushions the joints to prevent bones from rubbing together. This reduces inflammation and pain, offering much-wanted relief. With this, Synvisc may also help delay knee or other osteoarthritis-related surgeries, allowing your clients to continue with life as usual.

Synvisc is comprised of hylan (8mg/milliliter), sodium chloride (8.5mg/milliliter), disodium hydrogen phosphate (0.16mg/milliliter), and sodium dihydrogen phosphate hydrate (0.04mg/milliliter).

Synvisc is intended for intra-articular use by a licensed physician to treat pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knees, hips, ankles, or shoulders. Inject at room temperature with an 18–22G needle using strict aseptic procedures. For more guidance on the injection process, please consult the included product pamphlet.

The typical course of this procedure varies according to the area being treated. For the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee, it is recommended to administer 3-2 milliliter injections, 1 week apart. The maximum recommended dosage is 6 injections within 6 months, with a minimum of 4 weeks between treatment regimens. To treat the hips, ankles or shoulders, it is recommended to start with 1-2 milliliter injection, only administering a second injection if symptomatic relief from the initial session is inadequate.

Synvisc is intended for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knees, hips, ankles, and shoulders.

Prospective clinical data in knee osteoarthritis patients have shown this treatment to last up to 52 weeks following a single course of 3 Synvisc injections; however, the manufacturer specifies the results last up to 6 months.

Clients often turn to Synvisc to replace or to complement other osteoarthritis treatments, like anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy. Clients may also choose Synvisc treatments to put off surgery until a later date. Synvisc injections can help your clients whether they are experiencing their first osteoarthritis symptoms, or are in advanced stages of this ailment. Synvisc not only eases your patient’s pain, but can also mean increased mobility and quality of life.

If your clients are allergic to birds or to eggs, they should not undergo this treatment, as Synvisc’s formula is derived from rooster combs. It is unknown how Synvisc may affect developing children, so clients who are pregnant, nursing, or under the age of 18 should not use Synvisc.

Synvisc has been used in the US since 1997, when it gained FDA approval. Over the years, Synvisc has become 1 of the most commonly used treatments for osteoarthritis sufferers. Both orthopedic doctors and their patients trust Synvisc to provide effective relief from osteoarthritis inflammation and pain.

Purchasing Synvisc to treat your patients is an effective way to not only bring them immediate relief, but also to prevent future damage. With this treatment, you can effectively halt the progression of your patients’ osteoarthritis, reducing their need for further surgeries.

With the aging baby boomer population, osteoarthritis is on rise. You should be prepared to treat this issue with plenty of Synvisc on hand at your office or clinic.

Despite being similar to the hyaluronic acid found within the body, Synvisc may cause certain side effects. Commonly, these include swelling, pain, or irritation at the injection site. In order to lower the risk of allergic reactions, patients with known avian allergies should not proceed with this treatment.
