DEPO-PROVERA® is a medication that should be injected every three months as a form of birth control. It can also treat endometriosis. DEPO-PROVERA® is an injection of progestogen, a hormone that acts to prevent ovulation. DEPO-PROVERA® should be administered intramuscularly into the upper arm or buttocks by a qualified healthcare professional. This injection is usually given within five days after the onset of a normal menstrual period. DEPO-PROVERA® is supplied as sterile aqueous suspension in strengths of 50mg/ml and 150mg/ml in single-use vials.
DEPO-PROVERA® is used to prevent pregnancy and can also treat endometriosis. This medication is used only if other birth control options are considered unacceptable or unsuitable and should be used for the shortest possible time. Patients should be aware that there can be a delay in return to fertility after the use of this medication is stopped. Patients should be advised, however, that DEPO-PROVERA® does not protect patients against sexually transmitted diseases, including an HIV infection.
DEPO-PROVERA® is effective within the first five days of the injection when it is administered within the first five days of the onset of a normal menstrual period. It has an effectiveness rate of 99.7% for preventing pregnancy. DEPO-PROVERA® should be injected every three months; in this regard, it is convenient and offers long-term protection.
