Synvisc is a treatment for osteoarthritis (OA) pain of the knee in patients who have failed to find relief by conservative nonpharmalogic therapy and simple analgesics (example: acetaminophen). Synvisc was developed and is manufactured by the Genzyme Corporation. Synvisc provides lubrication to the knee and acts as a "shock absorber" for the knee joint. Synvisc is simalar to synovial fluid that is found naturally in the joints and is made from a substance called hyaluronan that is found in normal joint fluid.
It is shown that Synvisc is effective in all stages of Osteoarthritis, although most effective in less severe stages of this disease.
Uses:

  • Synvisc is used to relieve pain in the knee due to OA (osteoarthritis). This product is used when other forms of pain relievers do not provide enough relief. This medication is only for injection into the knee, and should only be performed by a doctor. The doctor will inject 2ml into the knee once a week, for a total of 3 weeks. Results don't always appear within the first week of treatment, it can take from 8 to 12 weeks after the start of treatment.

Precautions:

  • Avoid strenuous activity or prolonged (longer then an hour) weight-bearing activity (jogging, running, strenuous sport, lifting weights) for 48 hours following an injection of Synvisc unless you are otherwise directed by your doctor. Remember to keep Synvisc and all other medicines out of the reach of children. Never share your medications with others, and use Synvisc only as prescribed. This has not been tested in children, pregnant women or women who are nursing. You should tell your doctor if you think you are pregnant or if you are nursing a child. Synvisc should not be used if there is an infection or skin disease at the site of injection.

  • An overdose of Synvisc is unlikely to threaten your life. Even so, if an overdose of Synvisc does occur or is suspected contact your doctor and seek immediate medical attention.
