Synvisc is a treatment for osteoarthritis (OA) pain of the knee in patients who have failed to find relief by conservative nonpharmalogic therapy and simple analgesics (example: acetaminophen). Synvisc was developed and is manufactured by the Genzyme Corporation. Synvisc provides lubrication to the knee and acts as a "shock absorber" for the knee joint. Synvisc is simalar to synovial fluid that is found naturally in the joints and is made from a substance called hyaluronan that is found in normal joint fluid. It is shown that Synvisc is effective in all stages of Osteoarthritis, although most effective in less severe stages of this disease.
