DERMAL FILLER SAFETY QUESTIONED

The Media is a very powerful tool , it has the potential  to make or break anything it touches.

Thanks to advertising that helped bring the cosmetic industry to the kitchen table. It’s now trying to portray it as a potential health risk with biased reporting.

Media reported 930 complaints were filed with FDA regarding side effects of wrinkle fillers. The report did not disclose what product was used resulting in the adverse events. Last year, about 1.36 million women and 84,000 men received were treated with temporary dermal fillers. The 930 complaints were reported over a 5 year period and were often due to unapproved uses (with the lips being the second most common), allergic reactions or untrained technicians, giving injections in non-medical settings. It almost makes we wonder if some were trying to save a few dollars and self inject. There were 93 reports regarding defective devices, except for the three that caused injury how are they safety related? Interesting, the most complaints received were in 2003 and the least being in 2008 resembling a learning curve. Also out of the 930 reports 135 were from outside the USA -18 other countries.

I believe Natural Hyaluronic acid cosmetic fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm are be safe given they are administered as instructed. Hyaluronic acid has been used over 10 million times world wide, in the USA last year alone 1.36 million women and 84,000 men were treated, that’s around 4,000 treatments everyday.

After reading this report I see we Americans love to complain. I see temporary dermal filler use as very safe and effective, given that much like any service or product one is an informed consumer.
