Topotecan hydrochloride is trademarked and manufactured by Glaxo Smith Kline by the name Hycamtin. Hycamtin comes in capsule and vial form. The liquid form is often used combined with Cisplatin. Hycamtin belong to the group of cancer fighting medicines known as antineoplastics.

Liquid Hycamtin is often combined with other drugs and administered through IV as chemotherapy to stop the growth of a variety of cancers. Hycamtin has been used to treat non small cell lung, ovarian and cervical cancer.

Like with most medications Hycamtin may have side effects. Some common side effects are burning or tingling of hands or feet, fatigue, headache, muscle weakness, hair loss, constipation, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, appetite loss, stomach pain, mouth disorders. Possible serious side effects possible are black or tarry stools or blood in urine, problems urinating, fever or chills, coughing or breathing difficulty, back pain, bruising or bleeding, irregularity with skin. Allergic reactions may occur. Hycamtin should be avoided if kidney or blood disorders are present and the use of live vaccines. Hycamtin should be avoided if pregnant as it may harm unborn child, avoid breastfeeding as it may be passed through breast milk.
